Message	of the signal at different points on the engine and comparing it to the stock location. I'm sure you can imagine what kind of efforts that will take. Although, an easier method of doing it will be to put it in different locations and make it knock and see if it does retard the timing. But this has other drawbacks too. The lesser of two evils?
